‘Intuitive’ NAV makes work easier for Mt. Olivet Homes

With dreams of starting a nursing home, Mt. Olivet Lutheran Church bought an old Vocational Hospital in southern Minneapolis in 1958. The worn-down building was $17,000 in debt but featured 94 beds and promised huge potential. Nearly 60 years later Mt. Olivet Homes has grown into its own nonprofit corporation with three separate programs “offering a continuum of care,” as its motto so appropriately states. Mt. Olivet Home itself offers semi-independent living quarters for 94 residents. In addition, Mt. Olivet Careview Home features a full-care nursing home for 153 residents including a secure memory unit and a transitional care unit, and Mt. Olivet Day Services provides short-term care for both children and adults. Overseeing the financials for the services and amenities offered through each program is no small task.

Unfortunately for the finance staff at Mt. Olivet Homes, their accounting software was not being much help. The organization was struggling to make sense of their ERP system’s multiple customizations and workarounds.

“What I did not like about GP is that it was not intuitive,” said Controller Sharon Flack. “There were many ‘illogical’ steps that needed to be taken in order to post transactions.” Compiling together requested financial reports for any of the programs was particularly troublesome.

Flack and her team knew that their parent company, Mt. Olivet Lutheran Church, had recently switched to Microsoft Dynamics NAV, a similar ERP system with better industry-specific functionality. After several long conversations with them — and demos of the software — Mt. Olivet Homes decided to make the switch as well, using Boyer & Associates as recommended by the church finance staff. Flack was pleased with the implementation process. She said Boyer met their short timeline and was readily available to troubleshoot any problems quickly and completely.

“We have many customizations and while there were hiccups along the way, Boyer was able to program NAV to fit our needs.”

Flack said that with Dynamics NAV, the finance team has greatly reduced the time it takes to process accounts payable and journal entries. She’s also been very impressed with their new reporting tool, Jet Express, which is a free version of third-party vendor Jet Reports’ Business Intelligence suite. Flack said Jet Express overall “is an extremely simple program to use.” As for Boyer’s services, Flack said she appreciates the knowledge and professionalism the Boyer staff showed throughout the implementation process. She said Boyer’s pricing was reasonable, their staff readily available to address concerns and she would “highly recommend Boyer to anyone looking to switch to a Dynamics product.” As for the product itself, Flack has no doubt that Dynamics NAV was the best fit for Mt. Olivet Homes.

“NAV is more intuitive with greater functionality. I appreciate the professional reporting and being able to design NAV to do exactly what I need it to do.”
