Microsoft unleashes perfect storm with powerful cloud ERP
A new age in accounting software is finally here
Microsoft’s cloud-based accounting software is about to get an upgrade. The company recently released news about upcoming changes to Dynamics 365, the latest in its line of Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) software solutions.
On March 13, Microsoft officially announced the following changes to the product:
Dynamics 365 for Finance and Operations, Business Edition, was a mouthful. Try this instead: Dynamics 365 Business Central.
Dynamics 365 was first released in 2016, with both an enterprise edition for larger companies and a business edition geared toward smaller and mid-sized companies. Partners and prospects alike got a little confused with the names of the two editions, which have evolved over the past year. As a proud reseller of the business edition of Dynamics 365, Boyer is happy with the change.
The next version releases April 2 with the full functionality of Dynamics NAV, with one key differentiator: Dynamics 365 operates in the cloud.
Microsoft has three other successful accounting software products: Dynamics SL (initially named Solomon), Dynamics GP (formerly called Great Plains) and Dynamics NAV (also known as Navision).
Dynamics 365 created much excitement in the world of accounting because it was Microsoft’s first foray into cloud-based accounting software. The initial versions of Dynamics 365 quickly added improved functionality as demand grew.
The latest version of the renamed Dynamics 365 Business Central will have the functionality of a full ERP accounting solution. The product is designed closely after Dynamics NAV and is likely to be considered the cloud version of the world-renowned ERP.
An increase in price reflects the added functionality. Dynamics 365 Business Central (Essentials) will be $70 per user per month.
With Dynamics 365, Microsoft introduced a new pricing format. While the company’s on-premise ERP accounting solutions are sold as a one-time cost upfront, this Software as a Service (SaaS) product is sold as a monthly cost per user.
The $70 figure is $30 more than when the product was initially released. Existing users (those who order before April 2) will be grandfathered in at the initial price of $40 per user per month — and will still get the fully updated version when it releases. According to Microsoft, they can lock in the $40 monthly price tag for 2 years and 3 months, essentially saving $810 per user.
