Carol Simonson: You clearly like this idea of interviewing other people for your Dynamics GP posts now. Why are you doing this? Jack Boyer: I’m doing this because it occurred to me that my thoughts and ideas, while fascinating to me and my kids (ok I’m lying about the kids) are only so interesting due to my limited experience as mainly a sales and marketing professional and business owner. I’m also interviewing people because it allows me to learn more. One of the nice things about blogging is that you need to come up with research, create, or in this case borrow thoughts on a pretty much daily basis. This allows you to learn a lot of new things. I thought to myself if I could not only learn new things but get introduced to people … [Read more...] about Dynamics GP Key Interview Plans
AP Automation
Dynamics SL is known for its Multi-Company and Project Accounting capabilities. Dynamics GP is known for its strong financial modules and integration tools. Still the fact is that many of our clients on both sides simply buy and use General Ledger, FRx or Management Reporter for Financial Statement creation, and then Accounts Payable. Many add Accounts Payable EFT to get out of the writing checks tedium, but still…more than half of our clients on both sides are using these Microsoft products for their financial capabilities, not their distribution or project capabilities. Which begs the question…”What about AP Automation?” Isn’t there more we can do to eliminate the effort involved in having someone key in invoices for us to pay when … [Read more...] about AP Automation
Easier Sales Order entry in Dynamics GP
When we compare our Dynamics GP product to our Dynamics SL product, we find the following to be true. 1. Dynamics GP is easier to set up and get going quickly. 2. Dynamics SL is more fully featured. SalesPad, a distribution add-on helps bridge the gap between ease of use and being fully featured. People entering sales orders in SalesPad have a much easier time getting their orders in while at the same time having better features than the Sales Order Processing (SOP) and Purchase Order Processing (POP) modules offered by Dynamics GP. In the Sales Order screen within SalesPad you can see the whole ship to address and easily change that Ship To address. rearrange fields yourself as a user so that the fields are in the order … [Read more...] about Easier Sales Order entry in Dynamics GP
Dynamics GP for Dummies
I’ve always found the “For Dummies” books ironically satisfying. The titles require a self-deprecating and humble audience, yet the authors these “Dummies” hire are usually the best.I’ve read Patrick McEnroe’s “Tennis for Dummies” having played some tennis and experienced some of the best tennis coaches (for my kids) in the central part of the U.S. It takes a real expert to make complex concepts easy to grasp. The kid brother may not have been as good a player as his brother, John, but he sure is articulate and practical. Rather than grasping for straws today on a blog topic, I looked through my bookshelf and found “Small Business for Dummies" by Eric Tyson and Jim Schell. It reminded me how fun yet insightful … [Read more...] about Dynamics GP for Dummies
Closing The Month Faster with Dynamics SL and GP
Steven Bragg is the author of “Fast Close” and 18 other accounting books including one of the most best read accounting books in the U.S.-“Accounting Best Practices”.Some of you may be thinking that you would prefer to watch a Minnesota Twins game where the club makes their annual come back from a slow start into an exciting pennant contender. If you are more consumed with getting the books closed faster, this post is for you. Each year it seems there is more and more pressure to close quickly with Sarbanes-Oxley requirements and organizations eagerness to find out early how they performed due to the economy. Some of the bullets from Bragg’s book on closing your books more quickly are the following:Shifting the timing of closing … [Read more...] about Closing The Month Faster with Dynamics SL and GP
Dynamics GP Integration Suite and Integration Manager
Many software programs offer their integration tools for free. Typically, you get what you pay for and Integration Manager, part of Integration Suite, shows you that free is not always your best choice-especially if you've struggled with integration tools that make you experiment a lot in order to nail an integration. While Integration Manager is not free-the value it provides is high. The software has a user interface that shows you how your data will integrate. It validates the data coming in, and it provides useful information about rejected data.Below is an overview of Integration Manager with excerpts from the manual. This should show you that the documentation to the Dynamics GP Integration Manager is … [Read more...] about Dynamics GP Integration Suite and Integration Manager
What’s Really Happening “In the Cloud” ERP-Wise?
Here are Minneapolis-based experiences so far “in the cloud” as a Microsoft Dynamics SL and Dynamics GP partner, and conclusions from this experience.First, it doesn’t matter how you define “The Cloud”. People have defined the cloud in 3 different ways that I’ve heard recently. First, some think that SaaS (Software as a Service) is the cloud. Second, some think that anything running in a browser whether on premise or off-site is the cloud. Third, some think that the cloud is simply moving any legacy program to having it hosted elsewhere-regardless of how this is deployed.Does it matter for small to medium sized businesses how the cloud is defined? I used to think that it does matter. But does it? … [Read more...] about What’s Really Happening “In the Cloud” ERP-Wise?
Virtualizing Dynamics GP and Dynamics SL
Three years ago a large national medical association here in the Twin Cities (Minnesota, USA) shared with us that they had been running Dynamics SL in a virtual environment for the past year. We were surprised. That environment was not supported by Microsoft, yet here they were running in this environment for a year, without incident, and casually mentioned that this was working fine on their SAN. Since then, we’ve had many Dynamics GP and Dynamics SL clients running our products on virtualized environments. Mostly people have chosen VMWare, but occasionally we run into Hyper-V as well. Most picked VMWare because they were the leaders in the market, the “standard” option for virtualization. Microsoft just came on the market with … [Read more...] about Virtualizing Dynamics GP and Dynamics SL
Upgrading SQL 2005 for Microsoft Dynamics GP
An excellent marketing firm out of Fargo, ND, The Partner Channel, offers a useful magazine to partners. In their most recent magazine, is an article many of you on the Dynamics GP side of our business would find helpful. It’s written by a user, not a consultant-but clearly a user that could do consulting work.He discusses the following 3 options:1. Upgrading your Current Instance2. Installing a Side-by-Side Instance3. New Install on Different ServerThese ideas of course would work for Dynamics SL also or any of the Microsoft Dynamics products running on SQL Server such as Dynamics AX, Dynamics NAV, or Dynamics CRM. If you are considering this database upgrade, please read the post when you can at … [Read more...] about Upgrading SQL 2005 for Microsoft Dynamics GP
“Nothing Succeeds Like Success” in ERP Implementations
My mother was very smart because she was smart about things that mattered. Oh, she could do the hard math, the Latin, and the pain-in-the-neck late night questions from the high school kids (my sisters and I) without complaining, but mainly she knew how to have success at most endeavors. She used to say “Nothing Succeeds Like Success” a lot. While she was no where near as entertaining or flamboyant as my father, she always pushed us to have small successes first in any larger undertaking. …and it usually made a difference. It works at home too. I have one child that has an amazing backhand in tennis. She is more tentative with her forehand. If we start with nothing but backhands for her (instant success), the rest of the … [Read more...] about “Nothing Succeeds Like Success” in ERP Implementations
