Boyer & Associates recently hired a former Deloitte accountant to provide our clients assistance with accounting in Business Central. Riley Hulsebus is taking the lead on Boyer’s new Fractional Accounting as a Service (FaaS) offering.
The Iowa native has a master’s degree in accounting from Drake University and is a CPA experienced in audits. She worked at Iowa-based Meredith Corp. as an audit intern before landing a job at Deloitte, one of the Big Four Firms.
Hulsebus always knew she wanted to do something related to business. One of the first classes she had to take in college was accounting.
“Everyone was warning me the accounting classes are the worst thing you’ll ever do, but I liked it and I was good at it,” she said. She quickly determined that was a good niche for her.
During her time at Meredith, the company acquired Time Magazine, which gave her experience into the process of acquisitions. After two years there, Hulsebus decided it was time for a change of scenery and moved down to Dallas, Texas for the job at Deloitte.
At Deloitte, she learned how to work within different software systems and with companies in multiple industries including manufacturing, restaurants, aviation and fuel.
“In public accounting they just kind of throw you wherever you can and you just learn,” Hulsebus said. She liked the experience of serving multiple industries, but she wasn’t thrilled with coming in at the end of the process as an auditor.
“We come in after the fact and tell them you did all this wrong … I love helping so much more,” she said.
Her boyfriend Nick’s friend, Ben Cole, had his own business implementing Microsoft Dynamics Business Central and had clients asking for help with their books post implementation. He invited Hulsebus to join his team to fill that need, and together the duo created a new position.
“It’s kind of just evolved into this whole different thing,” she said. “People asked for stuff, and we did it and eventually we just kind of called it something.”
At ERP Connect Consulting, Hulsebus provided a variety of accounting services for half a dozen different clients. While she focuses primarily on accounting in Business Central, she does know enough about the system to help with the occasional implementation question as well.
When Cole decided to focus solely on Business Central extensions, he talked to his existing partner, Jack Boyer, about Hulsebus. Boyer had been exploring a similar concept and jumped at the chance to snag Hulsebus and her existing clients.
“I was a hostage trade,” joked Hulsebus. Still, she was excited at the opportunity to grow her side of the business.
“It’s been a great transition. I was new to Business Central when I started with Ben two years ago. I’ve learned a lot about BC, and the accounting is always the same,” she said.
At Boyer, Hulsebus’s services are part of our Managed Service offerings. She has 10 regular clients already and is hoping to get a second person to assist with the workload by the end of the year.
When she gets time off work, Hulsebus enjoys exploring the Dallas area with her cattle dog, Sadie. She also enjoys CorePower yoga and trying new restaurants, especially any that serve sushi.
She and now-fiancé Nick Tengwall are planning a December wedding and a European honeymoon.
